10 “Anti-Aging Tips” that Won’t Break the Bank

by earthscure

You don’t have to hand over a lot of money for fancy skincare treatments or injections to keep your skin looking youthful. Many lifestyle factors, including your diet, can help achieve better looking skin and overall health.

Follow these 10 tips to help to look vibrant at any age!

1. Think Positive

Thinking positive is associated with increased life span

Positive thinking has some surprising health benefits. According to Mayo Clinic, these include:

  • “Increased life span
  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress
  • Greater resistance to the common cold
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress”

Positive thinking does not necessarily mean avoiding or ignoring the bad things; instead, it involves making the most of the potentially bad situations, trying to see the best in other people, and viewing yourself and your abilities in a positive light.

Tip: Learn how to think positive on the Mayo Clinic Website.

2. Consider Fish Oil

Fish oil helps hydrate

Many people avoid dietary fat because we’ve been told that it’s bad for us. While it’s true that some fats — such as trans fats — should be avoided, you need some fat in your diet. Fat is necessary in order to absorb certain vitamins and to help your body produce hormones.

Fat is also good for your skin, especially omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Studies show that most Americans don’t get enough omega-3.

“About 95 percent of Americans have low omega-3 levels, which can lead to depression, heart disease, and other health problems. Not having sufficient omega-3’s in your diet can also be bad for your skin. ” (source)

Studies show that omega-3 deficiencies can lead to skin anomalies and water loss. Not good. The good news: adding polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as those found in fatty fish, can hydrate the skin and make it look nurtured. If you aren’t taking a good fish oil supplement, now is a great time to start!

3. Switch to Green Tea

Green tea is a powerful anti-oxidant

Green tea is one of the best things you can drink — for your skin and your overall health. Green tea is packed with powerful antioxidants that may combat free radicals. One compound that is abundant in green tea is known as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which has been shown to support health and the skin’s appearance. (1, 2)

Green tea can also be used topically. We add green tea in our Anti-Aging Facial Cream to help nurture skin and provide balance.

4. Try Retinol

Retinol helps is the “gold standard” in skincare

Retinol products are often recommended to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and for good reason. Retinol is vitamin A, which is essential for healthy looking skin. (3).

Many products with retinol are easily available. But, they can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun so make sure you wear sunscreen during the day. Discontinue daytime use if you notice redness or irritation.

5. Eat Fruits and Veggies

Fruits and vegetables help maintain skin

Diet isn’t always discussed when we talk about skin care, but the food you eat can have a huge effect on your skin — for better or for worse. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a good source of antioxidants that can help keep your skin healthy (4).

Plant foods get their health benefits from compounds known as polyphenols, which also give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors. Different polyphenols deliver benefits, so it’s a good idea to include a variety of differently colored plant foods in your diet.

6. Limit Sugar and Refined Carbs

Try to avoid sugar & carbs

Sugar isn’t just bad for your teeth; in excess amounts it can be bad your skin. Visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles and lines skin, are caused in part by bad diet and sugary foods.

To protect against this, start cutting back on sugar and refined carbohydrates such as white rice, bread, and pasta. Instead, choose complex carbohydrates such as leafy greens and vegetables.

7. Use Products with Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid helps temporarily plump skin

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and is often added to skincare products. Its main purpose is to lock in moisture and keep your skin well hydrated.

This hydration “plumps” up skin, which makes wrinkles and fine lines less visible.

EarthsCure Natural Anti-Aging Cream includes botanical hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the skin for a look that’s firmer, softer, and glowing.

8. Get Enough Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps skin

Vitamin C can benefit your health in several ways. It’s a powerful antioxidant that helps balance the body.

The body can’t produce vitamin C, so it must be obtained by the diet. Foods that are rich in vitamin C include broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupe, spinach, kale, red and green peppers, tomatoes, oranges, kiwi, and strawberries. You can also take a vitamin C supplement.

9. Limit Environmental Damage

Limit sun exposure – UV rays are the #1 cause of aging skin

Exposure to environmental factors such as air pollution, the sun’s UV rays, and cigarette smoke can also damage our skin.

Some sun exposure is necessary to allow your body to produce vitamin D, but don’t overdo it, and don’t allow yourself to burn. Cover your skin with sunscreen every day and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat if you’re going to be out in the sun. Don’t smoke, and avoid areas where you may be exposed to secondhand smoke.

10. Drink Acerola Cherry Juice

Acerola cherries are rich in vitamins

Studies show that acerola cherries are particularly high in vitamin C. (5).

These cherries may be hard to find in stores, but they can also be taken as a supplement. You can also purchase acerola cherry juice — just make sure the juice doesn’t contain a lot of added sugar.
